How it works

FONTSWAP converts fonts between TTF or OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 in the browser. It reads WOFF2's transformed outlines and metrics back into an installable font, writes WOFF2 with Brotli, and checksums every table. The outlines themselves are not converted: a PostScript .otf stays PostScript. The font is not uploaded.

What changes, and what does not

TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 are one font in different wrappers. WOFF squeezes each table with zlib; WOFF2 squeezes them all together with Brotli and is the one to put on a website. Converting between them changes the wrapper and nothing inside: the outlines, the hinting, the character map, the kerning and the names come out as they went in.

What it does not do is convert the outlines themselves. A font with PostScript outlines (most .otf files) stays one, and is saved as .otf; a TrueType font is saved as .ttf. Renaming an .otf to .ttf changes nothing inside it. WOFF2 made here is valid and every browser reads it, but it comes out around a tenth larger than Google’s own compressor, which also rewrites the outlines to squeeze them further. Font collections (.ttc) are not handled.

To see what is inside a font, including what its licence allows, FONTLENS reads it.
