One number

Use test numbers where you can. Nothing typed here leaves the tab, but a real card number is better not typed anywhere it does not need to be.

A list of them

How it works

CHECKDIGIT tests a payment card number, IBAN, ISBN, EAN or UPC barcode, VIN, UK VAT number, US routing number, ISSN or IMEI against its own check digit, and says what the right digit would be when it fails. Paste a whole column to check a list. Nothing is looked up and nothing leaves this tab.

What passing means

A check digit is arithmetic on the other digits, printed with the number so that a single mistyped digit, and most pairs of swapped digits, are caught before the number is used. Passing it says the number was not mistyped. It does not say the card exists, the account is open or the car is not stolen, and nothing on this page asks anybody.

The rules are each from their own standard: Luhn (ISO/IEC 7812-1) for cards and IMEIs, mod 97 (ISO 13616) and the SWIFT registry’s lengths for IBANs, mod 11 for ISBN-10 and ISSN, the GS1 check digit for EAN, UPC, GTIN and ISBN-13, ISO 3779’s position 9 for a North American VIN, HMRC’s mod 97 scheme for UK VAT numbers and the 3-7-1 weights for a US routing number. To make test data that passes, FAUX writes it.
