How it works

IWORK opens a .pages, .numbers or .key file in the browser and shows the preview picture iWork saved inside it, with every photo, film and sound that was put into the document, ready to save. It does not read the text or the tables, which are in a format Apple has never published, and it says how to get those out. Nothing is uploaded.

What this can and cannot open

A Pages, Numbers or Keynote file is a zip. Inside it is a preview picture of the first page, sheet or slide, which iWork saves for Quick Look, and every picture, film and sound that was put into the document, as the original files. IWORK shows the preview and hands all of those back, so the photos in a Pages document or a Keynote deck can be had on any computer.

The words, the tables and the slides themselves are in Apple’s own compressed format, which Apple has never published and changes between versions. IWORK does not try to read it, because a guess would show you a document that is subtly not the one in the file. For those, iCloud’s web versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote are free with any Apple Account, run in any browser, and export to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF. That does mean uploading the file to Apple.

A file from iWork ’09 carries a whole-document PDF preview, which IWORK saves as it is. A document that shows as a folder on a Mac has to be compressed into a zip first (right-click, Compress).

Doing this often? Once the file is a PDF, PDF Studio edits the text in it, fills and signs it, and compares versions. On its own, US$2 a month; with everything else, US$5 a month or US$48 a year. 7 days free.
