The track

Drop a GPX, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, TCX or FIT file here From a watch, a phone, a bike computer or a mapping site. It is read in this tab, and no map is asked for.

How it works

ROUTE reads GPS tracks, routes and waypoints from GPX, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, TCX and FIT files and saves them as GPX, KML, GeoJSON or CSV. It shows the distance, the climb, the time taken and a drawing of the track with no map tiles behind it. The file is read in this tab and nothing is sent anywhere.

How it reads and writes

Every format is read into the same waypoints, routes and tracks, each point with its latitude, longitude, and height and time where the file has them, and written out of that again, so nothing is lost that the format you choose can hold. Where it cannot hold something, the page says what before you save. Heart rate, cadence and power from a watch are not carried across.

The drawing is the track on its own, with no map under it. A map would mean asking a map server for the pictures of every place the track goes, which is exactly what a file like this should not do. Distance is along the great circle between each pair of points; climb adds up every rise, so it reads higher than a watch that smooths its barometer. To cut your home out of a track before you share it, TRAIL does that.

Doing this often? OBSCURA Pro saves the converted track from here, along with the result of every other tool outside the Workspace, and includes the paid applications. Everything is US$5 a month or US$48 a year, 7 days free.
