Square footage and square metres, for a room of any shape AREA
An L-shaped room is two rectangles, and a chimney breast is one taken away. The area comes out in square metres and square feet together, converted the right way.
The floor, shape by shape
Split an awkward floor into rectangles, triangles and circles. Tick “take it away” for anything inside the outline that is not floor: a chimney breast, a stair opening, a fitted unit you will not go under.

The working
A foot is 0.3048 m exactly, by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959. A square foot is therefore 0.09290304 m², and a square metre is 10.7639 square feet, not 3.28.
How it works
AREA works out the floor area of a room that is not a plain rectangle. Split the floor into shapes, add the ones that are floor and take away the ones that are not, and read the answer in square metres, square feet and square yards at once. The measurements stay in this tab.
Doing this often? Foundry, the Engineering Suite's drawing half draws the room to scale and measures any area off the drawing, holes taken away, then prints the plan to scale. On its own, US$2 a month; with everything else, US$5 a month or US$48 a year. 7 days free.
