The reveal is the depth of the return around the opening, and it is paint. On a deep reveal it gives back most of what the hole took out.
The paint
A surface factor of 1 is smooth and previously painted. Bare plaster is nearer 1.3 on the first coat and a textured wall has more surface than its measurements say. Going from dark to light is a colour factor, not an extra coat you can leave out.
