The mean is the balance point, so one large value drags it. Average household income is not what a household earns, and average response time is not what a caller waits.
The numbers
One per line, or separated by spaces or commas. Currency symbols and thousands separators are ignored.
The summary
Quartiles by linear interpolation between order statistics, which is what most statistical software uses. Nine published definitions of a quartile exist and they disagree on small samples, so the one in use is named rather than assumed.
