The archive

Drop a .rar, .7z, .tar.gz, .iso or other archive here It is read in this tab, and the list comes first.

How it works

UNPACK opens RAR, 7z, zip, tar, gzip, bzip2, xz and ISO archives in the browser using libarchive compiled to WebAssembly. It lists the contents and their sizes, lets you save single files or everything as a .zip, opens a zip locked with a password, and refuses names that would write outside the folder.

What it opens, and how

The reading is libarchive, the library behind bsdtar and the Mac’s Archive Utility, compiled to WebAssembly and served from this site. It opens RAR (RAR 4 and RAR 5), 7-Zip, zip, tar with gzip, bzip2, xz or lzma over it, and ISO disc images. It only reads: to make a zip, PACK does that, and STRONGBOX makes one with a password.

A name inside the archive that would write outside the folder, such as ../../file, is shown and refused. The sizes are added up before anything is taken out, so an archive too large for the tab says so instead of stopping halfway. A zip with a password asks for it, and nothing is guessed. A 7-Zip or RAR archive with a password cannot be opened here, because libarchive does not decrypt those, and the page says so.

Doing this often? The OBSCURA Sovereign Suite checks a whole batch of files before any is opened: whether each is what it says it is, and what it hides. On its own, US$2 a month; with everything else, US$5 a month or US$48 a year. 7 days free.
