Before a photo goes online, you often need to hide a face, a licence plate, a screen, a name badge or a house number. The apps that do this upload your photo to their servers first. VEIL does it in this browser tab: drag a box over anything and it is pixelated into your image at full resolution, and it can find faces for you with a small model that also runs on your device. Drag a box across any face or detail to blur it. Use Find and blur faces to do the faces automatically, then fix up anything by hand.
It pixelates, and pixelation is final. Each area you mark is broken into coarse blocks, baked into the image, and the original detail underneath is thrown away in the saved copy. That is stronger than a soft blur, which can sometimes be partly reversed. Save the blurred copy and keep your original separately.
Face detection is a helper, not a guarantee. The face finder is a small, fast model that runs on your device. It catches most clear, front-facing faces, but it can miss faces at an angle, in shadow, small, or turned away. Always look over the result and drag a box over anything it missed. The first time you use it, it downloads the model once (program code, not your photo) and then works offline.
Metadata is separate. VEIL blurs what is visible in the picture. A photo can also carry hidden GPS and camera data. Run it through CLEANROOM or the EXIF checker as well if you want that stripped.
Nothing leaves this tab. The photo is decoded and edited here, and the saved image is written to your device. Open the privacy badge and watch: blurring a photo adds nothing to what the page uploads.
